The era I am trying to create
virtually is around 1800, give or take a few decades either way.
and using a sailing simulator. However although some of the screenshots
show the content in the
sailing simulator, "Vista" brought changes so now waiting on the next
version of the sailing simulator to be able to continue creating
suitable sceneries to contain the content I make. Satellite data is
used for the scenery creation and in the meanwhile there is much that
can be done with Blender (free and
open source 3D content creation program).
Once the blend file is created you can export it to a variety of file
types.
For my requirements I export to vrml2 file type but may also use obj.
file types once the next version of the sailing simulator becomes
avilable.
The screenshot below is a good starting point to explain and shows the
approximate layout of Liverpool docks at around 1830. I made this one a
few years ago so the content I made is fairly basic.
The next sceneries will start at Liverpool and the river Mersey
stretching upriver as far as is navigable and dowriver, out of the
estuary and working both ways. Turning left towards Wales and right for
Lancashire, Cumbria and Scotland. The era will be a bit earlier than
the previous sceneries.
Setting the era a few centuries ago means that we do not need to create
complex bridges and much of the coastal scenery can be fairly rural.
However at the same time we need to try and develop the river systems
which are the main arteries for carrying goods of all types.
Unfortunately canals are not possible at present due to the water
levels required and working locks I do not think would be possible in a
sailing simulator. Barges and narrowboats would be horse drawn anyway.

Liverpool early 19th Century (pretend)
Content made with Blender for a sailing simulator
Also as an important
part of recreating a coastal maritime environment set in an age of
centuries ago is what can be seen from the boat. In the sceneries I
made a while ago that included Conway in North Wales and the river
Conway and area I included the castle. I made two versions of it, one
that included the water gate entrance and the curving line of small
defensive turrets leading down to it. This part is nowadays under the
footing of the suspension bridge I think. The other version was without
the watergate area.
Anyway to complete this page before moving on to the next one and the
beginning of the new sceneries I have included the older version of
Conway castle I made a few years ago now. This is looking out towards
the port of Deganwy on the opposite river bank.
Again pretend set in
c1830 this version of Conway
castle.
